People that drive at night without their lights on.
Tonight, I was driving towards an oncoming black hole, which confused the living hell out of me for a little bit. As we got closer, I then realized this was a Honda Pilot driving without any of its lights on, so I flicked my high beams on at it. And as we parted ways, I looked in the side mirrors and saw their lights turn on.
How do you drive without realizing your lights are off?!

Gotta be honest, I'm guilty of driving without my headlights on at night one time. I had been driving the Vue really often and it had auto lights, so when I drove my Safari I forgot to turn the lights back on after I left the gas station. I noticed just as someone flashed their lights at me. Felt like a dumbass.

Funny because 50% of all streetlights in Brooklyn aren't on/working.

Guess I've been living with "old" cars for too long to remember that auto headlights exist.

Or their daytime running lamps. I've seen way to many cars with just the drls on, barely illuminating anything.

I pulled out in front of a guy with his lights off a few weeks ago on a dark road. He laid into his horn as he ran up on my tail and I still couldn't see him until he was right up on my ass in the glow of my tails. Then he flashed me about ten times, pulled over the double yellow, and flew off. Even after he flashed me with his highs he still didn't turn his lights on. I have no clue how he was even staying on the road...it was dark enough I couldn't see the lines with my lights out (I checked after the incident).
People.

I don't get it either. Tonight I saw a Toyota Sienna with no lights on - not even daytime running lights (which are a legal requirement here - indicating that the van was imported from the U.S.).

It should be illegal to sell a car with DLRs that don't also have automatic headlights and if it's out of auto mode, the DLRs don't come on.

The one time I drove without my headlights on was for 5 minutes after leaving an extremely well lit parking lot on to a brand new street with tons of brand new street lamps. As soon as I turned off it I about shat myself because it went pitch black.

This happens in the city all the time. I regularly yell at drivers when I'm in a crosswalk - their lights are out, and they have no idea.

I've done it once but with my parents car that didn't have auto lights, I realized when I couldn't see the Speedometer or Radio so within about 5 mins.

I'm confident it's not a willful thing - folks just aren't paying attention, (or drunk or something.) They start the car inside a lighted garage or something and never even notice. My personal pet peeve is just the opposite - folks that leave their lights on after parking and letting the auto headlight function turn them off (after sucking the battery for a couple minutes.) "Uh, maam - you left your lights on", "No I didn't, they will turn off by themselves." "Uh, ok..."

I did this once. In my defence, it was a rental car in a foreign country ('Murica) that doesn't require DRLs. My DD has auto lights, so it's not something I ever think about. I only realized it when there ceased to be street lights on the road, and my passenger noticed the road got awfully dark. Ooops!
I broke a lot of laws that day, but was thankfully held accountable for none.

Meh. I'm more annoyed by people who drive with their brights on than no lights at all. Few things are worse than an inconsiderate driver blinding every-fricken-one.
I also don't get people that drive in the Nevada desert with fog lights on. "One of these days, we'll get fog! Just you watch! And when we do.... I'm not only ready, but I've been ready!!" 8-)

Hell, I ran into a bit of a snow squall today, and passed more than a few people who didn't have their lights on, DRL or otherwise.

My mom's 2014 Camry has a auto light function. It also has a complete off function. My mom's old (sadly totalled) manual base 2009 Matrix had Auto lights. Couldn't turn those off.

Some newer cars (including the Honda Pilot and other cars mentioned in the comments) have gauges that are lit up when the car is running, and completely black when the car is off. Lots of Toyotas/Hondas are like this. My theory is, someone sees that the gauges are lit up, and doesn't realize they haven't turned the lights on yet.

It's more common now because many cars have permanently illuminated dashes so there's no clue that your lights are off until you get to somewhere where it's actually dark.

I was once up for about 30 hours running a loaded plowing and got in my truck at about 9 pm that has auto headlights, I turned them off so I could take a quick nap in the truck without someone bothering me, when I woke uo and hour later to drive back to the ship to grab a sanding truck I forgot to turn them back on and the small town I drive through had great at lights. About 100 yards outside of the center of town I passed a cop, they pulled me over to tell me my lights were off and to check if I was drunk. So there are reasonable reasons for it to happen.

I've been meaning to post something about this for some time now. Most people don't understand that when I flash my lights as them, it means to turn theirs on.
Moreover, these are the worst offenders:
1. Honda Civic
2. Toyota Camry
3. Toyota Rav4
4. Subaru Forester
5. Honda CRV
ALL ASIAN!

I understand not realizing it because the street lights are bright.
I don't understand never glancing down at your gauges once. If you can't see how fast you're going, your lights probably aren't on.
Hey, y'all, watch this!

I've done this, briefly, in my Fusion. I've never had auto lights before, but I guess I got used to them pretty damn quickly, because when I got it inspected, they turned the switch from "auto" to "off" and it wasn't until someone tried to change lanes into me that I noticed. (It was raining, not night, but still idiotic of me.)
So I suspect it's a combo of being used to auto lights plus a dash that's lit whether the lights are on or not, with a dash of head-up-one's-assery.

It used to be that if your instrument lights were off it meant that the headlights were off as well. But now we have these fancy instruments that need to be lit up 24/7 and it can lull you into a false indication that your headlights are on, or at least it can in old farts like me. The very night I picked up my Mazda a couple of years ago I got pulled over for not having my lights on, but thankfully the officer was understanding and didn't cite me after I explained what happened.
Now I just turn my lights on regardless of the hour or conditions...
